Job Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine is searching for an independent, organized, and highly-dedicated Research Laboratory Specialist Associate to join Dr. Cindy Hsu?s laboratory. Dr. Hsu is a NIH-funded emergency medicine/critical care physician-scientist and the Division Chief of Critical Care in the Department of Emergency Medicine who strives to improve the outcome of cardiac arrest patients by transforming how we translate neuroprotective therapies from large animal models to clinical trials. This role will be to assist with and eventually oversee translational research projects that focus on testing novel neuroprotective therapies in the swine cardiac arrest models. This position provides ample opportunities for professional growth through skill acquisitions, scientific publications, and mentorship.

As Research Laboratory Specialist Associate, you will be a vital member of a growing multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Hsu. You will also work closely with several research faculty and staff within the Weil Institute for Critical Care Research & Innovation at the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC) on other clinically-relevant large animal models including cardiac arrest, hemorrhagic shock, traumatic brain injury, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and septic shock. Responsibilities*

Interact professionally and collaboratively with all members of the research team

Laboratory operations (20%)

  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of animal and experimental protocols
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and documentation of lab safety for compliance
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentations of controlled substance medications for the research projects
  • Other tasks may include autoclaving, ordering supplies, preparation of stock solutions, and preparing surgical trays
  • Support Dr. Hsu and project team with scheduling meetings

Data management and analysis (20%)

  • Organize and maintain clear and accurate records of samples and data 
  • Work independently to perform routine data processing, analyses, and presentation to faculty investigators at lab meetings on regular basis
  • Work independently to produce tables, charts, and graphs for lab meetings, publications, and grant proposals

Training (10%)

  • Supervision and training of laboratory staff, student employees, and volunteers on equipment use and laboratory techniques.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science or Licensed Veterinary Technician with at least 2 years of experience in using animal models of critical care illness and injury which is directly related to the duties of the position. 
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in a related field.
  • Ability to be flexible with working hours to provide appropriate post-operative care to animals.  
  • Strong interest in cardiac arrest and critical care research with self-motivation for independent learning and enthusiasm for developing new skills and expertise.
  • Must work well independently and in a group, have excellent organizational and time management skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, be detail-oriented and able to keep accurate records, and able to multitask.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to work overnight shifts.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Work Schedule

40 hours/week, some night shifts required
Full time Monday thru Friday 8am-5pm with the potential for after hours depending on the project

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
