Summary: The Benefit Small Business Unit Leader is a senior role that, in collaboration with both regional and national leadership, oversees the strategy, operations, and financial performance of the small group market segment within the Benefits division. This role is responsible for the overall financial performance of the Unit, which is effectively achieved through the creation of efficient processes and deliverables, appropriate sourcing of technology and vendor solutions for areas such as quoting and plan renewal financials and successfully leading the teams in each region handling the work.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute the vision and strategy for the small group market segment, aligned with the overall regional and national Benefits goals and objectives. 
  • Manage the P&L and regional cost allocation for the small group segment, ensuring profitability, growth, and operational excellence. 
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of small group leaders in each region, providing guidance, direction, and performance management. 
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with regional Presidents, the national Head of Health & Benefits, as well as other key stakeholders, ensuring alignment and collaboration across the division and the company. 
  • Identify and implement technology solutions and process improvements to enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and quality of the small group deliverables, including quoting, plan design, renewal, and reporting. 
  • Monitor and analyze market trends, customer needs, and competitor activities, and provide insights and recommendations to drive innovation and differentiation in the small group segment. 
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, contractual, and internal policies and procedures related to the small group segment. 

Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of employee benefits including but not limited to expertise in the small group market, carrier and vendor relations, plan provisions, underwriting, contracts and/or risk management.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with carriers, vendors, peers, professionals, and management.
  • Ability to translate strategic initiatives into tangible business deliverables.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly in both written and oral communications.
  • Ability to design and deliver effective presentations.
  • Strong negotiator and able to influence others.
  • Proven experience successfully managing teams, budgets, projects and producing quality deliverables in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Effective time management and decision-making skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving ability.
  • Customer service oriented.

      Education and/or Experience: 

      • Minimum four-year college or university degree, preferably in Finance, Business, Health Administration or related field.
      • Minimum 7+ years of employee benefits experience.
      • Minimum of 7+ years of management experience, preferably in the benefits space.
      • Life and Health license preferred.

        CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION:  Life and Health license, industry designations preferred.
