Duties
- Supervising, planning, organizing, and developing community oriented ambulatory psychiatric, mental health, social work, and counseling/therapy services.
- Set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work; assign work to subordinates based on priorities.
- Reviews the clinical practices and procedures and directs the activities of the Behavioral Health staff in accordance with the objectives of the Indian Health Service.
- Provide mental and psychiatric health maintenance, emergency, and therapeutic services for lifespan patients.
- Provides independent diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic nursing and medical services for patients of varying complexity and advanced nature utilizing advanced clinical and analytical skills.

Education: A graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited professional nursing educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. This education must have been accredited by the , , , or an accrediting body recognized by the at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the . In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.
GS-13: In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Requirements applicants must have at least one or more full years of professional nursing experience that is equivalent to the next lower grade level.
- Examples include: Providing a blend of nursing and psychiatric care services to patients and families, making diagnoses per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV); knowledge of alcohol/drug rehabilitation programs including 12 step sobriety programs; knowledge of mental health pharmaceuticals to provide medication management and counseling; leadership and supervisory experience directing a nursing team, unit or department.
