ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The City of Cambridge Traffic, Parking, and Transportation (TP+T) Department supports the safety and health of the Cambridge community by creating and sustaining a high-quality street and parking system that supports a range of transportation options for all those who live, travel, and park in Cambridge.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reporting to the Supervising Engineer in the Street Management Division, this position will provide traffic engineering support of the daily operations of the Engineering unit, relating to traffic signals, traffic data monitoring technologies, traffic engineering studies, and other tasks assigned.
  • Primary duties include Oversee traffic signal capital program and routine maintenance, assist the traffic control installation process, and assist with special event preparation.
  • Other duties include Conduct investigations relating to traffic controls and public inquiries; support the Department’s customer service goals in relation to a timely and professional response to the needs of the community, elected officials and other city departments; attend meetings in the absence of the Supervising Engineer.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop and administer city-wide traffic signal capital improvement program.
  • Conduct routine field inspections and diagnose basic traffic signal problems.
  • Build and maintain a desktop computer model of the stop-and-go signals network.
  • Perform intersection capacity analysis and create coordination plans.
  • Implement changes in local signal controllers.
  • Develop a centralized traffic management system and add local locations to the system as part of the capital improvement program.
  • Supervise the signal contractor for maintenance of existing signals.
  • Coordinate mark-out of underground traffic signal utilities (i.e. DigSafe).
  • Conduct traffic studies including speed studies; traffic, pedestrian, and bicycle counts; turning movement counts; manual classification counts; crash studies, and other data collection efforts as required to support traffic engineering studies and roadway design projects.
  • Prepare traffic control work orders for both city staff and contractors for the installation, improvement, and maintenance of traffic signals and other traffic control devices.
  • Work with department intern/cooperative education student.
  • Administer the City’s traffic data collection program contract.
  • Assist with purchasing and service contracts with outside vendors.
  • Review roadway construction and design plans relating to traffic controls.
  • Provide staff support for capital project delivery (quick build and partial construction).

Other specific duties may include following:

  • Assist with snow emergency traffic operations.
  • Prepare purchasing requests for traffic controls.
  • Prepare plans and graphics for public communications.
  • Assist in the layout of new pavement marking locations on roadways from drawings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field required. Five to eight years of experience in the transportation engineering field preferred. Must be able to conduct tasks with little supervision and have good oral and written communication skills. Must be well organized and able to manage multiple responsibilities. Ability to convey complex technical information to the public in a timely and professional manner. Ability to understand traffic engineering plans.

Engineer-in-Training (EIT) license or Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. Excellent computer skills required and familiarity with Synchro, AutoCAD, and GIS strongly preferred. Mass Class D driver’s license required. Experience with riding a bicycle or micromobility device preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work involves frequent site visits, requiring travelling to and through active construction zones. Work indoors is in a professional office setting. Work outdoors includes construction sites and congested city roadways under all weather conditions Supervising Engineer may adjust work hours to cover operational needs. Position is in-person, with hybrid schedule/telework allowed subject to the provisions of the City’s Telework Policy.
