Full Job Description

The Senior Manager for Democratizing Music in Delaware - an important new position at The Music School of Delaware, celebrating its centennial in 2024-25 - is a vital leader within and without our community music school, dedicated to moving music forward as a fundamental human right across the state of Delaware, and fostering an inclusive community that celebrates diversity and ensures equitable access to and engagement in Music School programs for all current and prospective students, families, staff, and faculty. This position plays a crucial role in developing and implementing DEIAB (diversity, equity, inclusion, access, belonging) strategies that promote a culture of belonging, addressing systemic inequities, centering historically oppressed and/or under-served peoples and communities, and enhancing the overall educational and creative experiences of the School and the communities we partner with, serve, and impact.

It is expected that the person in this role will quickly develop a deep understanding of the changing face of Delaware; will interrogate demographic and socioeconomic trends to point up opportunity areas across the organization; and will leverage talents, relationships, and insights from a broad range of current and prospective stakeholders to drive strategy, policy, people, and program recommendations and, ultimately, to drive evolution, growth, and change.

The ultimate goal is for The Music School to support all individuals, families, and communities in connecting with themselves and the world around them, realizing their greatest potential and their best selves through the power of learning, practicing, and performing music.

The Music School of Delaware is led by President & CEO Stephen Beaudoin, MBA, "an energetic music executive on the rise" (Musical America magazine), with an experienced staff, dedicated board, and extraordinary faculty of 100+ teaching artists in voice, all instruments, composition, and more, with programs, private instruction, classes, and ensembles for students of all ages, from 1 to 90+.

Position Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Leadership and Planning (30%)

- Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to foster expanding access and inclusion, aligned with the school's mission and goals.

- Lead the newly reforming DEIAB committee, ensuring representation from various stakeholders across the community.

- Collaborate with senior leadership to integrate DEIAB principles into the school's strategic plan, operation, and culture.

- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of DEIAB-infused initiatives, making data-informed, human-driven recommendations for improvements.

2. Program Development and Implementation (25%)

- Recommend, design, pilot, and/or promote programs and initiatives across all parts of the enterprise, in collaboration with appropriate members of the School leadership team (President/CEO, Dean, Director of Development, Director of Community and Operations), that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and access across the school.

- Coordinate workshops, training sessions, and events that educate and engage the School community on DEIAB topics - for staff, faculty, and board.

- Work with the School Dean and faculty to develop inclusive curricula and teaching practices.

- Ensure that recruitment, admissions, and retention practices support a diverse student body and faculty, aligned to articulated goals that represent the changing face of Delaware.

3. Community Engagement and Partnership Building (20%)

- Build and maintain relationships with external organizations and community groups.

- Represent the school at community events, conferences, and meetings related to DEIAB.

- Serve as a resource for students, staff, and faculty seeking support and guidance on DEIAB issues.

4. Policy Development and Compliance (15%)

- Review and recommend updates to school policies to ensure they promote equity and inclusion.

- Support school HR function in compliance with relevant laws and regulations related to diversity and anti-discrimination.

- Conduct regular assessments of the school's climate and provide reports to leadership.

5. Communication and Reporting (10%)

- Communicate DEIAB initiatives, progress, and outcomes to the school community through various channels.

- Prepare and present reports to the President, CEO, and Board of Directors on DEIAB activities and impact.

- Maintain a DEIAB digital resource library for the school community.

6. Other Duties (5%)

- Participate in professional development opportunities (conferences, workshops, trainings, etc.) to stay current on DEIAB best practices.

- Perform other duties as assigned by the President and CEO.

Position qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in a related field is recommended but not required.

- Minimum of 5 years of experience in professional roles, preferably in an educational or nonprofit setting. These roles could be in programming or program leadership, in DEIAB, in teaching/curricular leadership, community engagement, training, or other similar functional areas.

- High level of self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing DEIAB programs and initiatives.

- A learner's mindset, avidly interesting in coaching and supporting others' learning and growth.

- Track record of successfully helping to drive complex organizational change.

- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to analyze data and use it to inform decision-making.

- Strong commitment to the mission and values of the School.

- Able to navigate and thrive in a high change environment.

About The Music School of Delaware

Celebrating one hundred years of musical connections in 2024-25, The Music School of Delaware is the only statewide, accredited community music school in the United States of America. Through a vast statewide call to action, powered by a deeply committed community of faculty, staff, board, supporters, and community partners, The Music School of Delaware seeks to foster meaningful human connections and build leaders of today and tomorrow through the transformational power of music education and performance. Led by recently appointed President & CEO Stephen Beaudoin, MBA, the School is undergoing significant evolution and change, leveraging the occasion of its Centennial celebration in 2024-25 to grow and expand community relationships, test and pilot new initiatives, and interrogate new communal meaning in the School's mission: Musical Excellence for All. What do we mean by music - what styles and types, representing what cultures and traditions? What definitions of excellence - devised by whom? And what do we truly mean by all? This role will help to explore, question, shape, and provide strategic guidance in this bold next hundred years of impact and inspiration for the School.
