A Brief Overview
At the core of CHOP's Digital Transformation strategy lies an imperative to accelerate adoption of modern cloud capabilities in a way that advances our mission of quality care, seamless experiences, and transformative research. As Senior Cloud Architect, you will play a vital role in defining CHOP's enterprise cloud strategy, leading our cloud transformation program, progressing our infrastructure-as-code imperatives, and ensuring maximum capture of value. The Senior Cloud Architect will establish and lead CHOP's Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE), focusing on the core areas of governance, brokerage, and adoption. The CCoE will be the primary governing body over the use of cloud at CHOP and will establish usage guidelines, technological roadmaps, define key security guardrails, and determine appropriate financial controls. The leader will define our brokerage strategy for cloud, including standards for infrastructure-as-code and automated solution delivery, while managing our key strategic cloud service providers. Finally, this role will lead our cloud transformation program to significantly and thoughtfully increase adoption of cloud technologies to reduce operating costs, improve experiences, and provide access to modern cloud-based capabilities including generative AI. The Senior Cloud Architect will join a team of other skilled architects within the Digital Technology Architecture group under the Enterprise Technology Platforms & Solutions (ETPS) organization. This role will report to the Sr. Director of Digital Technology Architecture.

What you will do
  • Establish the Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE) governing body for the use of cloud across CHOP's enterprise, defining standard approaches to governance, brokerage, and adoption of cloud technologies.
  • Develop architectural patterns for cloud technology usage and adoption, incorporating CHOP's unique clinical, business, and research needs into a clearly-defined, and purpose-built set of standards that accommodate the majority of cloud-oriented use cases.
  • Develop and lead adoption strategies, inclusive large-scale cloud transformation programs. Partner with CHOP lines of business and application teams in the development of adoption plans, and ensure realization of value and appropriate use of technology capabilities.
  • Define the architectural standard for provisioning and usage of cloud resources, inclusive of infrastructure-as-code standards. Evaluate and select key DevSecOps capabilities for adoption by the broader technology organization, and aid in the development of training curricula designed to broadly elevate knowledge across technology teams.
  • Lead solution architecture design for complex business systems that require the use of cloud technologies. Lead technical discussions amongst business and application teams to identify needs, and then establish structured prototyping exercises ultimately resulting in efficient solution designs and cost estimates.
  • Utilize deep problem solving and critical thinking skills to develop solutions for difficult challenges within our clinical and research areas, utilizing modern cloud-native application designs.
  • Provide thought leadership in cloud solution architecture, accommodate peer reviews, participate in architecture governance forums, and challenge the status quo when it comes to how CHOP thinks about cloud technology. Be considered the resident expert on cloud at CHOP.
  • Provide expert-level architectural guidance and insight for both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure cloud platforms for what is a hybrid and multi-cloud enterprise infrastructure at CHOP. Advise on adoption of additional cloud technologies (including Google Cloud Platform) as required.
  • Lead research into emerging cloud technologies and trends to determine relevancy and fit for CHOP. Develop position papers and present findings during regular leadership forums.
  • Establish a cloud Community of Practice (CoP) as part of the CCoE, integrating key members from stakeholder groups across CHOP's business lines to both ensure the thoughtful accommodation of specialized needs into the cloud strategy, but also to partner in the evaluation and release of new cloud technologies.
  • Partner closely with Information Security and Engineering teams in the development of the cloud strategy and definition of standards. Utilize security guidelines to influence guardrail decision making, and ensure engineering teams are properly equipped to accommodate defined standards.
  • Own the relationship with, and establish appropriate governance over cloud service providers (CSP) at CHOP. Act as the single point of accountability for assessing all CHOP work with CSPs to determine appropriateness and priority. Partner closely with Supply Chain in the ongoing evaluation of commercial terms, and seek out favorability for CHOP by way of improved economics and/or services provided.
  • Conduct cloud economic assessments to ensure appropriate use of resources, and partner with engineering teams to establish appropriate levels of financial guardrails to limit unforeseen cost escalations. Aid in the development of a long-term FinOps practice for the dedicated management of cloud expenditure.
