Provides basic technical support on projects and day-to-day activities related to testing traits in alfalfa. Performs basis analysis with minimal direction. This position is part of the alfalfa product development team for alfalfa breeding and trait development. The primary responsibilities of the position are to perform routine plant pathology support including seeding, inoculation, plant evaluation and potting.
Responsibilities
Plant pathology support - 40%
- Includes seeding, inoculation, plant evaluation and potting.
- Supports project work through routine testing, greenhouse or field operations, or analysis and R&D trial support.
- Performs basis analysis and reviews data for appropriateness.
Greenhouse - 30%
- Responsibilities include pollinations, seed harvesting, vegetative cuttings, plant maintenance (general watering and fertilizing) and seeding.
- Maintains equipment as needed.
Quality - 20%
- Supports the Forage Quality Testing program by helping organize sample collection, processing and analysis.
- Performs basic analysis in multiple areas.
- Perform quality control checks on results.
- Meets established quality requirements and customer service levels. Communicates results and any problems to manager in a timely fashion.
Field Activities - 10%
- Includes nursery establishment and maintenance.
- Adheres to all R&D policies for Safety.
Required Experience/Knowledge (to be able to perform this job):
- High School degree with 3 years related experience; or Associates degree in related technical field with 1-2 years work experience in a research/testing lab; or Bachelor's with 0-1 years relevant experience.
- Certified private pesticide applicator in state of Wisconsin or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
- Ability to assure accuracy in labeling samples, labeling data and in the collection of data. Executes experiments and collects data as directed.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Ability to support and train others in execution of technical activities.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary research team.
- Ability to work independently and contribute to operational planning and business strategy.
- Experience in data management and analysis.
- Experience in Microsoft Office applications and database knowledge.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in greenhouse and small-plot field research.
- Familiarity with using a commercial breeding software.
Wage: $21.00 - $23.00 hourly
