GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

As the Research Associate, you will provide key support in the upcoming exhibition Across Wine-Dark Seas: Art and Identity Beyond Ancient Greece, opening at The Met in December 2026. You will assist in all research and administrative aspects of the exhibition. You will support the curatorial, administrative, and exhibitions team throughout the planning, development and execution of the exhibition. The exhibition brings together works of art from all regions around the Mediterranean Sea, and beyond, focusing on the period from the eighth to early fifth centuries BCE when the Greeks traveled to far off places, where they interacted with diverse local cultures.

This is a position with an established end-date or time frame. Time frames will begin upon hire: 2 years.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Research, investigate, and document diverse artworks to support the exhibition and accompanying publication.
  • Assist exhibition curators and editors in drafting texts for labels, images, catalogue entries, captions, digital content and bibliographies.
  • Assist with lender correspondence including loan agreements, requirements, right and permissions, and provenance.
  • Organize research and lending documentation utilizing museum databases.
  • Facilitate and prepare, lectures, tours and walkthroughs of the exhibition.
  • Assist Curatorial, Registrar, Design, Art Handling, and Exhibitions team members in the coordination of gallery installation.
  • Assist with grant applications and fundraising activities for exhibition.
  • Coordinate with internal museum departments involved in all aspects of exhibition actualization.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MA in Art History or related field required: PhD or ABD preferred

  • Strong background and Mediterranean art and archaeology, preferably with a focus on Greek art.

  • Some reading knowledge of German, French, and Italian preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience with academic research. Ability to work independently and effectively meet deadlines.

  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel), Microsoft Teams, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Adobe Photoshop; experience with TMS (The Museum System) database preferred.

  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication and collaboration skills.

COMPENSATION RANGE:

  • Pay Range: $68,000.00 - $70,000.00 / Annually

The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.
