Full Job Description

The Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago seeks applicants for a position as tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Design expected to begin July 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications are invited across a range of specializations at the intersection of visual design and digital media making. These include (but are not limited to) visual communications, speculative design, digital storytelling, graphic design, moving image media, and human-centered design. The selected candidate will be expected to contribute to the Media Arts and Design (MADD) program, maintaining an active creative agenda in their area of specialization, and performing service duties related to the position (e.g. advising BA and MA thesis projects, serving on committees, etc.).

Qualifications

We seek candidates with a focus on digital or interactive media production, with a preference for candidates who also incorporate theory into their practice and writing. Candidates should have demonstrable research distinction, which includes both exhibited artworks and published scholarship, as well as evidence of excellence in teaching. They should be qualified both to teach introductory and required courses in Media Arts and Design practice and theory.

The position requires an MFA or PhD in media production, visual communication design, or design, with a proven record of exhibition and online production with national and/or international public audiences; a supplementary record of scholarship, such as articles and book chapters; strong practical knowledge of visual communication design; and prior experience teaching at the University level. Preferred qualifications include: work across media forms that includes experimental and critical making oriented projects.
