Summary:

UNC Therapy Services, the outpatient orthopedic therapy division of the Rehabilitation Services Department at UNC Medical Center, is now accepting applications for a Physical Therapist II - Clinical Specialist. Located at the Ambulatory Care Center in Chapel Hill, NC, this role is designed for an experienced therapist with at least 5 years of expertise in outpatient orthopedics. This position provides the opportunity to offer high-quality, one-on-one patient care, participate in clinical mentorship, and contribute to team-wide growth initiatives, all while focusing on direct patient care.

We take pride in our commitment to one-on-one care with 45-minute evaluations and treatments, ensuring a patient-centered and personalized approach. This unique aspect of our care model allows therapists to deliver focused, quality care, fostering strong therapeutic relationships and optimal outcomes—something many of our candidates value when choosing to join our team.

In addition to patient care, you will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing continuing education, community and professional outreach, process improvement, and program development initiatives. These opportunities allow you to broaden your impact and professional growth by contributing to the development of new clinical programs, quality improvement projects, and educational outreach within and outside of our team.

This role is ideal for clinicians looking to continue providing exceptional patient care while also engaging in professional development through residency and junior clinician mentorship, student teaching, and participation in various rehabilitative care-enhancing initiatives.

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Expertise in orthopedic rehabilitation, manual therapy, and therapeutic exercise.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Experience in mentorship, clinical teaching, and/or leadership within a physical therapy setting.

    Core Responsibilities:

    1. Advanced Patient Care: Provide expert, evidence-based rehabilitative care to patients, encompassing evaluations, treatments, planning, and ongoing assessments across orthopedic, sports, recreational, and occupational injuries, as well as geriatrics and post-surgical recovery. Deliver personalized, one-on-one care through 45-minute evaluations and treatments. Employ current and advanced treatment techniques to offer high-quality, efficient rehabilitative services. Provide both habilitation and rehabilitation, and organize patient care, prioritizing patients’ needs and those of their families.
    2. Clinical Mentorship & Collaboration: Support clinical mentorship initiatives, including mentoring physical therapy residents, onboarding new employees, and precepting students. Serve as a resource for junior therapists and contribute to the ongoing professional development of your team.
    3. Broader Contributions: Participate in committees, task forces, and initiatives that address process improvements, quality care, and program development. You will have opportunities to engage in community outreach, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing education that align with your professional interests.
    4. Advanced Diagnostic Testing & Evaluations: Perform in-depth diagnostic assessments and utilize advanced testing methods to develop personalized care plans that meet patient needs. Educate peers, mentors, and students on evidence-based testing and analysis.
    5. Educational Engagement: Serve as a consultative resource for colleagues and contribute to educational outreach efforts. Present your knowledge and expertise in orthopedic care at internal meetings or external conferences. Serve as a resource to North Carolina government departments and statewide health professionals in specialty areas.
    6. Collaboration & Multidisciplinary Engagement: Work alongside educators, rehabilitation providers, physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals to deliver holistic and coordinated care for your patients.
    7. Quality Improvement: Uphold the quality of clinical services through meticulous maintenance of valid and reliable records of patient procedures and progress. Engage in quality improvement initiatives alongside departmental leaders, clinical specialists, and other healthcare professionals. Play a role in continuous quality improvement efforts and lead these efforts when they align with your clinical role and professional interests.
