Job Summary

A Nurse Informaticist is a registered nurse who transforms data into needed information and leverages
technologies to improve health and healthcare equity, safety, quality, and outcomes. They have specialized
knowledge and expertise in health informatics, a multidisciplinary field that combines nursing science with
information management and analytical sciences. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to
implementing and optimizing health information systems, data management and analytics, training and
education, quality improvement, project management, policy and compliance, communication, and research
as applied to improving patient care and optimizing nursing workflows.


The Nursing Informatics department at Michigan Medicine works collaboratively with all of Nursing, Allied
Health Partners, Office of Clinical Informatics, and Health Information Technology and Services, across all
patient care areas to assess, plan, integrate and execute clinical technologies across patient care. This team
helps develop policy, procedure, and workflows to enhance proficiency and effectiveness in a manner
consistent with the enterprise level model of care, ideal patient care experience, and approved standards of
care, while utilizing informatics principles and tools, particularly in relation to the Electronic Health Record.

*Concerning Michigan Medicine's Flex First policy, this position will be Hybrid. Onsite work is
required based on the customer needs related to training, testing, activation of units, and in-person
meetings.

Responsibilities*

Under minimal supervision, the candidate will: 

  1. Assessment: Collect comprehensive data and information to understand current state workflows for technical systems hospitals use in their daily work including but not limited to the electronic health record, communication devices, patient monitoring devices, and medication management devices. This includes utilizing reports and dashboards to obtain relevant information. 
  2. Diagnosis, problems, and issues identification: Analyzes assessment data to help identify the root cause of the problem and where opportunities for improvement should be focused. Functions as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in nursing technology workflows. 
  3. Outcomes identification: Leads a team to identify expected outcomes and measure results of implementations. 
  4. Planning and Implementation: Utilizes project management skills to independently lead hospital changes. Helps plan technology improvements throughout the system development life cycle (SDLC) including planning, analysis, testing, creation of application reference material, training, implementation, support, and maintenance phases of the project. The training includes partnering with unit educators to train staff on application optimizations, software solutions, and devices. (E.g., Epic (MiChart), Rover, and clinical iPhone usage) 
  5. Evaluation: Works with end-users to ensure the implemented technology solutions meet the workflow and technical needs. Collaborate with hospital leadership to ensure technology solutions meet hospital strategic plans. 
  6. Ethics: Uses knowledge of informatics and ethics to evaluate factors related to privacy, security, and confidentiality in the use and handling of data and information. This includes following HIPAA regulations and working with Information Assurance (IA) to provide a mature and safe clinical IT (Information Technology) environment. 
  7. Culture, Communication, and Collaboration: Effectively collaborate with nurses, physicians, clinical users, and hospital leadership via email, during collaborative meetings, and when presenting in front of large groups to ensure enterprise, organization, and project goals are met. Candidates will participate in all activities with interrelated teams. Partnering with the University of Michigan Schools, including the School of Nursing, on projects such as educating nursing students, predictive analytics, machine learning and research initiatives will be required. The candidate will uphold Michigan Medicines' cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion standards. 
  8. Leadership: The candidate will lead project implementations and make recommendations on how to advance nursing practice through technology. 
  9. Professional development, evidence-based practice, and research: Actively seeks opportunities for lifelong learning through self-reflection and inquiry to address learning and personal growth needs. Uses current research findings and other evidence to expand knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgement. The candidate will work with device vendors, unit governance committees, and HITS (Health Information Technology Service) to identify and implement improvements to the technology workflow of nurses based on literature and benchmarked best practices. 
  10. Quality of practice: Leads quality improvement efforts and analyses regulatory body findings to initiate changes in nursing and informatics practices in the health care delivery system as they relate to technology nurses? use. 
  11. Feedback: Engages in self-evaluation and leverages feedback from others to identify areas of strength and where professional growth would be beneficial. Additionally, provides feedback and mentors others. 
  12. Resource utilization: Employs appropriate resources to plan and implement informatics and associated services that are safe, effective, and fiscally responsible.? 
  13. Environmental health: Considers technological factors that threaten physical or mental health such as sound frequency, level, or tone. When choosing devices, ergonomic and safety factors are considered. 

Required Qualifications*

  • RN (Registered Nurse) Licensure in the state of Michigan 
  • BSN  
  • Experience: 3+ years with a combination of nursing informatics, project management, or nursing leadership experience 
  • Clinical experience that has provided the opportunity to demonstrate competencies in clinical care, information technology, leadership, education, and staff development required.? 
  • Understanding of workflow analysis 
  • Understanding of the System Development Life Cycle 
  • Understanding of project management tools, terminology, and stages 
  • Ability to prioritize and lead multiple concurrent projects 
  • Ability to work in a dynamic development environment and adjust to constantly changing priorities, processes, and project plans 
  • Willingness and strong aptitude to learn innovative technologies and assume increasing responsibilities 
  • Background in clinically focused projects and knowledge of impacts to patient care, workflows, roles, and clinical governance  
  • Experience with Epic 

Desired Qualifications*

  • RN (Registered Nurse) Licensure in the state of Michigan 
  • BSN 
  • Master's degree in relevant clinical/allied health discipline 
  • 5+ years with a combination of nursing informatics, project management, or nursing leadership experience 
  • ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) board certification in Nursing Informatics (NI-BC) or other nursing informatics certification (e.g., CAHIMS or CPHIMS) 
  • Project management certification (PMP, or LEAN Six Sigma) 
  • Project management experience strongly desired 
  • Familiarity with Service Now 
  • Experience in implementing healthcare technology solutions 
  • Acquired an Epic certification 
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail 
  • Excellent analytic and problem-solving ability 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams of all sizes 
  • Exceptional relationship-building and interpersonal skills 
  • Competent in Microsoft Office Suite

Background Screening
