Your Role:

The Investment Manager will be a key member of the investment team that is responsible for all aspects of more than $9 billion in investments across 3 portfolios: an insurance general account, a defined benefit pension, and a defined contribution plan. The investment team is responsible for developing and implementing investment strategies that balance the risk/total return/income of each portfolio with each entity’s business needs and the current economic environment. The team works closely with many internal partners in different departments to support the company’s income and risk management objectives, as well as multiple industry partners and external asset managers in various asset classes: fixed income, global equity, real estate, private assets, hedge funds and others.

In this role we are looking for someone with outstanding analytical, communication and advocacy skills. You should have a willingness to innovate and challenge conventional thinking while demonstrating independent, critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, knowledge of investment, risk management and portfolio management theories. You have a strong work ethic and passion for investments, integrity, reliability and attention to detail. You can multi-task in a fast-paced dynamic environment and have the ability to work autonomously yet collaboratively as a team member. You are positive, proactive and have a can-do attitude. Your work:

  • Assist VP of Investments in the design, implementation and oversight of investment strategies for CSAA’s various portfolios

  • Prepare materials for Board, Committee and Management reviews. Present to senior management and various plan committees as needed

  • Monitor and manage various portfolios for inflow, outflow and other rebalancing needs including liquidity forecast. Make rebalancing and implementation recommendation to VP of Investments at least monthly

  • Monitor capital market conditions regularly. Contribute and present investment ideas to improve portfolio returns

  • Use quantitative and qualitative methods to model and monitor investment risks in different portfolios; perform simulation analysis for asset allocation studies, including assisting with risk and return forecasts. This is required for both asset-only and asset-liability context

  • Develop and maintain investment policies, objectives and guidelines for externally managed accounts by outside investment managers

  • Monitor the performance of external investment managers with both quantitative and qualitative analyses. After careful due diligence, make recommendations for replacements, additions or removals of managers to the VP of Investments

  • Stay informed of current investment research and regulatory changes

  • Coordinate with operations team on execution, compliance, performance reporting, accounting and audit concerns

Required Experience, Education and Skills

  • 8+ years of direct investment experience and 3+ years in decision-making role with an institutional investor or asset management firm

  • Direct experience in liability-driven investing context. Understanding of hedging techniques highly desirable

  • Experience across asset classes, including equities, fixed income and alternatives. Direct portfolio management experience required. Direct portfolio management experience for ERISA plan assets highly desirable

  • Understanding of markets, economics and cross-asset dynamics – demonstrated ability to provide thought leadership and advocacy skill for asset allocation decisions

  • Knowledge of corporate finance theory, economics, capital markets, risk management theory, asset allocation theory, investment management theory

  • Expert knowledge in using Bloomberg, Factset or similar investment and risk management systems

  • Outstanding analytical skills

  • Excel modeling skills essential

What would make us excited about you?

  • MBA, CFA, CAIA or another advanced degree related to investments, economic, finance or quantitative analysis highly preferred

  • Experience in financial derivatives particularly interest rate swaps and futures highly desirable

The salary range for this position in the Bay Area is $180,000-$200,000 as this is a Hybrid role (average of 3 days per week in office and 2 days remote). However, we have a location-based compensation structure. Our salary ranges vary and are calculated based on county of residence. The full salary range for this position across all the states we hire in is $159,000-$200,000. This role also includes an opportunity for a company-wide annual discretionary bonus, through our Annual Incentive Plan (AIP), of up to 12% of eligible pay.
