About the Team

PetSmart Veterinary Services (PVS) is an independent veterinary ownership model that is rapidly growing inside PetSmart locations in the US and Puerto Rico. PVS provides a complete solution for veterinarians to open their own franchised veterinary practice. Launched in 2022, PVS hospitals connect pet parents with local, trusted veterinarians with convenient veterinarian hospital locations within PetSmart stores. It’s a simple but powerful solution that gives veterinarians ownership and control of their practice while providing high-quality veterinary care.


About the Location

Hybrid Position:

This position is based in Phoenix, Arizona and may be considered Hybrid based on PetSmart’s FlexSmart policy and business needs. A Hybrid work arrangement is considered to be a blend of onsite and remote work activity. Associates with a Hybrid work arrangement have a work space at Phoenix Home Office and can be required to come onsite between 1-5 days a week as determined by leadership and based on business needs.


About the Job

As the Director of Veterinary Hospital Performance, you will lead a veterinary hospital support team dedicated to optimizing the operational efficiency, financial success, and overall quality of care at our franchise-owned veterinary hospitals.  This role involves substantial travel to franchise locations, where you will collaborate with franchisees to implement strategies that drive profitability and ensure sustainable growth.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Team Management:

  • Lead, coach, and mentor a team of business consultants to effectively drive financial and operational improvements across franchise veterinary hospitals.
  • Provide direction and support to direct reports, ensuring they have the tools and guidance needed to succeed in their roles.
  • Develop and nurture a high-performance team culture focused on achieving financial goals and enhancing franchisee support.

Financial Performance Optimization:

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance financial performance, focusing on revenue growth, cost management, and profitability for franchise hospitals.
  • Analyze financial data and performance metrics to identify opportunities for improvement, providing actionable recommendations. This includes measuring key performance indicators (KPIs) such as revenue per doctor day, labor spend, and cost of goods management.

Franchise Support & Collaboration:

  • Travel to franchise locations to work directly with franchise owners and hospital managers, gaining insight into their financial challenges and identifying opportunities for growth.
  • Provide guidance and support to franchisees in implementing financial best practices and driving operational improvements.
  • Foster a culture of exceptional service to ensure veterinarians receive top-tier, concierge-level support.

Data Analysis & Reporting:

  • Leverage data-driven insights to monitor hospital performance, track key performance indicators (KPIs), and report progress to executive leadership.
  • Conduct financial reviews and audits to ensure franchise hospitals meet or exceed operational and financial goals.

Operational Excellence:

  • Implement and promote best practices and standard operating procedures to enhance hospital operations and patient outcomes.
  • Address and resolve operational issues and challenges, providing guidance to franchisees to ensure minimal disruption to services.

Strategic Planning:

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to establish performance goals and benchmarks for franchise hospitals.
  • Develop and oversee the execution of strategies that align with both PetSmart’s objectives and the operational realities of franchise locations.
  • Create plans for hospital performance improvement and growth of revenue.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in veterinary care and hospital management.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the franchise network.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Healthcare Management, or a related field; MBA, DVM, CVPM or degree in Healthcare or Hospital Management is a plus, but not required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in financial management or business consulting within the veterinary industry, with a proven track record of driving financial success in multi-unit operations.
  • Possess the ability to influence without authority and can create an engaging and collaborative environment with DVMs.
  • Leadership experience in a multi-site veterinary operational business, required
  • Proven proficiency in financial analysis, performance metrics, budgeting, and cost management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with franchisees, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with a strategic and innovative approach to overcoming financial and operational challenges.
  • Highly motivated, inquisitive, and self-starter who can multi-task and effectively manage priorities to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 50% of the time to various franchise locations. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position will lead a team of varied levels.

TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Must be proficient in using the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge and proficiency with other business systems as required by specific roles
