Job Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a highly motivated and innovative individual to design and develop strategic communications (print, web, social media) to elevate the department's internal communications and showcase our research, education & training, clinical care to a wide range of external academic audiences.

This position will report directly to the EM Manager of Operations with a dotted line for technical expertise to the Communication Senior Supervisor for Emergency Medicine and the Weil Institute. The position will partner closely with the Emergency Medicine Department Chair and Chief Department Administrator and other key EM Department Leaders to develop and execute strategic communications plans for the department.

The individual in this role will also be a part of the U-M Medical School Hospital-Based and Medical Services Community of Practice and will act as a liaison with the Michigan Medicine Department of Communication following policies and guidelines set by the institution and ensuring alignment with institutional strategies.

Our clinical operations at University Hospital (UH), Children's and Women's Hospital (C&W) and Hurley Medical Center (HMC) are focused on continuously improving the quality of patient care and optimizing the patient care experience. Our training programs include a required rotation for all UM medical students, a four-year residency with 64 residents that rotate to four clinical sites including UH, C&W, HMC and St Joes Ann Arbor and 8 different fellowships to incorporate the latest innovations in medical education. Our broad research portfolio spans the spectrum of emergency medicine, ranging from molecular biology to health policy, with significant expertise in multicenter clinical trials, injury prevention and emergency critical care. In terms of service, our faculty hold significant leadership roles in the medical school, hospitals, health system and national organizations. They also serve the local community in Ann Arbor and globally through our leadership of emergency medicine training programs in Ghana.

Responsibilities*

  • Work with the Michigan Medicine Department of Communications and Emergency Medicine department staff to support external and internal web needs including content creation, strategy, and occasional updates.
  • Write, edit, and coordinate content for social media, websites, email campaigns, newsletters, event communications, presentations, and reports.
  • Work with the Michigan Medicine Department of Communications to identify new marketing opportunities to reach and engage a diverse range of audiences. 
  • Identify and pitch stories to the Michigan Medicine Department of Communications PR team for coverage on the Health Lab blog and other digital channels.
  • Partner with the Michigan Medicine Department of Communications, and key department stakeholders to support the promotion and growth of strategic education and research areas.
  • Assess and determine department communication and marketing needs and make appropriate recommendations based on overall strategies.
  • Develop and execute an internal communication strategy that aligns and reflects the department's strategic goals and values to faculty, students and staff.
  • Make continuous improvement in the quality and consistency of marketing and communication that maintain branding and professional standards across communication platforms.
  • Increase efficiency by streamlining and coordinating digital properties within the department and the Michigan Medicine Department of Communication.
  • Design engaging and effective communication materials across multiple forms of media, such as print, web, PowerPoint, and social media.
  • Participate in the U-M Medical School Hospital-Based and Medical Services Community of Practice for peer networking, opportunities for cross promotion and to identify best practices for communication projects.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders for effective planning, communications, and outreach.

    Required Qualifications*

    • Bachelor's degree in related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • 3+ years of relevant professional experience in communications and outreach or equivalent experience.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write for multiple audiences and at multiple literacy levels.
    • Proficiency in project management and file sharing software (e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive, Trello), communication and meeting management tools (e.g., Zoom, Teams, Slack); and    graphics/presentation software (e.g., Canva, etc.)
    • Demonstrated knowledge and use of current social media platforms and trends.
    • Well versed in MS Office products.
    • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
    • Flexibility in work hours is required with some evening and/or weekend hours for community engagement/stakeholder meetings.

      Desired Qualifications*

      • Familiarity or experience in an academic or healthcare environment.
      • Experience using Drupal or similar platforms for website management and maintenance.
      • Experience using Google analytics or other reporting applications.
      • Experience with email marking platforms such as Constant Contact or Mailchimp.

        Modes of Work

        Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.         Background Screening

        Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
