Job Summary

The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security, Department of Public Safety-Flint Campus, is looking for a Communication Officer. We are a full-service law enforcement agency responsible for providing police services to all areas of our campus community. Our mission is to contribute to and promote a safe and secure community while respecting the rights and dignity of all persons using the facilities and programs of the University of Michigan. We are a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week operation that includes weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime assignments.

This position is a full-time appointment, 40 hours per week (100% effort). 

As a Communication Officer, you will receive calls for police, emergency or security assistance; dispatch police and security staff to ensure a safe and secure environment and protect University facilities; and to provide security and customer services.

DPS provides complete law enforcement services to the campus. Our police officers are licensed by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and authorized to enforce all federal, state, local laws, and rules of the University of Michigan. All employees are well trained in services unique to an academic institution. Responsibilities*

You will:

  • Uphold the highest standards of conduct and customer service while serving and protecting our community and taking measures to prevent crime
  • Receive and prioritize calls and determine appropriate action for emergency and non-emergency assistance
  • Communicate with and elicit useful information from upset and irate citizens
  • Dispatch public safety and security personnel to all University owned, controlled, and leased facilities and properties
  • Coordinate first responder information through computer call for service (CFS) dispatch system and radio, mobile data terminal, telephone, pager, and other devices
  • Monitor several complex public safety radio frequencies, building alarms and security systems
  • Maintain liaison with police, fire and other emergency agencies to assure the safety of the University community
  • Deal with confidential information
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • High school or GED equivalent and two (2) years of relevant experience

OR

  • Associates degree and one (1) year of relevant experience

AND

  • Capability to react with compassion and calmness while eliciting useful information and adopting appropriate action plans for emergencies
  • You have mental, visual, and auditory acuity stamina
  • Advanced typing skills for data entry
  • You must pass a comprehensive public safety background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.
  • You will be in a uniformed position and required to maintain appearance and grooming standards by following the DPSS uniformed personnel dress code.

Modes of Work

Onsite

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan. 

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.  Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modeshere.

Additional Information

All members of the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report any Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees must also complete the Clery Compliance training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Pay Range Information

The full time annual probation pay range for new Communications Officers is $49,400.00 to $50,388.00. This position is a full-time appointment, 40 hours per week (100% effort). 

The full-time annual salary range for Communications Officers who have completed a one-year probationary period is $52,936.00 - $61,464.00 and can be found in the POAM bargaining agreement.

Background Screening

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.  Background checks will be performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
