Job Description

Metro State University, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor of Cell/Molecular Biology. This is a probationary (tenure-track) position within the Natural Sciences Department, College of Sciences and will start on August 18, 2025.

Responsibilities

Faculty members are expected to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to teach general biology, genetics, cell and/or molecular biology courses effectively to a post-traditional student population and contribute to meaningful assessment of student learning.
  • Develop new courses in developmental biology and potentially in other areas of expertise.
  • Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research.
  • Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study.
  • Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance.
  • Engage in service to the university and community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving a diverse student body by delivering a student-centered education and using approaches that support equitable outcomes for all students.
  • Provide excellent learning environments through in-person, online, and/or hybrid course modalities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of a masters degree in the specified disciplines of Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a related field with enrollment in a doctoral program for fields in which the doctoral degree is the terminal degree. Doctoral program must be successfully completed within 5 years to meet the requirement for tenure.
  • Demonstrated interest in faculty position that prioritizes teaching and emphasizes teaching excellence.
  • A plan for scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research in the specified discipline(s), or related disciplines.
  • Effective communication skills (written & verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with students and colleagues who are culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse.

Preferred Qualification

  • A completed terminal degree in the specified disciplines of Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a related field. MDs and DVMs with relevant expertise in these fields will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching at a post-secondary level.
  • Experience developing course curricula at a post-secondary institution.
  • Demonstrated contributions to assessment of student learning at a post-secondary institution.
  • Professional development and/or expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, and/or universal design.
  • Experience as an academic advisor for students at post-secondary institution.

The Natural Sciences Department offers degree programs spanning the biological and physical sciences with courses taught in the Jason R. Carter Science Education Center, a state- of-the-art facility on our Saint Paul campus. All degree programs in Natural Sciences provide students with training in the theoretical background, laboratory skills and practical application of their chosen discipline. We offer bachelors degrees in (1) Biology, (2) Biochemistry, (3) Chemistry, (4) Environmental Science, and (5) Life Sciences Teaching.

The successful applicant will add expertise in the areas of cellular and/or molecular biology, adding to our strong faculty biology base in plant molecular biology, microbiology, ecology, and invertebrate biology. Additionally, the Department houses chemists, physicists, and geologists, with a total number of eleven faculty members. Our STEM student body is the most diverse of all universities in the Minnesota State system, with over 50% of undergraduates in these programs identifying as students of color. Class sizes for both lectures and labs are typically capped at 24, granting students the individualized attention more commonly seen at private liberal arts colleges.

The Natural Sciences Department is housed in the College of Sciences, which also contains programs in computer science/cybersecurity and mathematics/statistics. Opportunities for interdisciplinary studies within the department and college as a whole are strong.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement.
