    Job Summary

    Marsal Education is seeking an experienced professional to serve as an Academic Advisor. As a member of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), you will join a highly collaborative, high-functioning, and cohesive team. Under the supervision of the Director of Student Affairs and Career Services, you will:

    • Advise prospective and current undergraduate students
    • Build and sustain strong relationships with internal and external partners
    • Contribute to recruitment efforts by co-creating strategies for the discovery and cultivation of prospective students.

      Responsibilities*

      Academic Advising (75%)

      • Provide academic advising to prospective and current undergraduate students in the Education for Empowerment Minor and our new first-year admitting program, LEAPS (Learning, Equity, and Problem Solving for the Public Good). This includes one-on-one appointments via in-person, phone, or Zoom, email correspondence, phone calls, group advising sessions, and walk-ins. 
      • Routinely evaluate, maintain, and update students' academic records for progress toward minor/degree completion, including formal audits before graduation.
      • Interpret and provide accurate information about school and university policies and procedures, and serve as an informed resource for students.
      • Maintain a working knowledge of relevant course offerings to support students' interests and professional goals.
      • Continuously review and update advising guidelines, procedures, and processes for improving efficiencies.
      • Refer students experiencing academic or personal difficulty to the appropriate resources, and follow up on these referrals.
      • Update advising materials in print and on the web, including, but not limited to, web content, handouts, and resource materials.
      • Provide accurate and timely information to program chairs and directors, faculty, and staff colleagues.
      • Utilize Business Objects and other sources to gather student data for the commencement booklet.
      • Stay current with relevant advising practice and research (e.g., student development theory, and appreciative advising).
      • Represent the Marsal School with the Advising Council at the U-M (ACUM)

        Internship Development & Coordination (20%)

        • Develop and manage outreach/communication to promote the minor to potential partners.
        • Issue and manage course permissions for the required minor internship.
        • Actively pursue, build, and sustain partnerships with internal and external employers.
        • Closely monitor students enrolled in the internship course; ensure satisfaction among students and internship supervisors.
        • Utilize Symplicity to track and manage all internships.
        • Develop policies and procedures related to internships and ensure compliance among students and internship sites.

          Other (5%)

          • Develop public presentations designed to promote the minor to other advisors and faculty on campus
          • Co-create strategies, with the recruitment and admissions team, for the discovery and cultivation of prospective students
          • Contribute assistance in developing and performing additional projects and tasks as needed or assigned.

          Required Qualifications*

          • Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience in academic advising or counseling
          • Experience working with diverse communities and cultures or underrepresented minority populations
          • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
          • Excellent presentation skills with experience presenting to groups
          • Self-starter and motivated with the ability to work toward goals and deadlines
          • Ability to work independently as well as within a team and exercise judgment
          • Demonstrated ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data
          • Knowledge of FERPA regulations
          • Proficient computer skills

            Work Schedule

            Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required. May require working during non-business hours and occasional weekends for events such as orientation, and the Marsal School Spring Commencement.

            Work Locations

            The Marsal Family School of Education is located at 610 E. University, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. While the majority of the work days will be on site at the Marsal School, on campus, this role will allow for a flexible schedule of up to two days per week performed remotely. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent upon the business needs of the school and/or university requirements.
